PMI of KSU Third-Gen Web Site :: Carrie Garzich

Before my PMI, full disclosure here. I interned at Mediaflow, the company that did the design of the Kent site, in the summer of 2001, at the time the design for the third generation site was being planned. So I've seen the site evolve and also have a little bit more knowledge of the thought process that went into the original third-gen design, although it's been through some fairly substantial iterations since, as well as how the site was built.

Pluses

• Visually pleasing.

• Tabs for navigation make things easy to find, site-wise.

• Search right up top makes it easy to look for things.

• Photos changing on each load of the page keeps site looking fresh.

• Tabs mostly make sense in terms of their names.

• Font is very easy to read and used fairly consistently.

Minuses

• Layout sometimes blows out on load.

• Very link-heavy, which makes it difficult to navigate through the homepage.

• Because all of the university sites aren't integrated, breadcrumbs fall apart when you leave the main third-gen site.

• "Academics" and "Research & Partnerships" might be difficult for some people to understand.

Interesting

• Phone directory is so important it gets an icon and red font.

• Red, italiced FlashLine looks like it was just tossed in. One would think they'd have planned for it and given it an icon like the phone directory.

• Main KSU phone number up at the top, not buried as it usually is on a Web site.

• Current students and prospective students are two separate enough groups to be broken down into two different tabs.

• Search is spelled out in button next to text field, not "Go!" or some of the other oft-used terms.
